Fairgrounds and figureheads

The worshipful company of...

I have decided to embark on an illustrated journey of the worshipful companies. All 108 of them...I expect there will be more by the time I end (if I ever do!).
This was an idea that has been sitting in an old notebook....I think I am at least three notebooks on now, but it is time to take hold and put this idea into fruition! If all goes to plan I will fit one in a week in-between all the other things I am doing at the moment! And much further in the future I can imagine this would make a lovely book!

Coast Magazine

Had a visit to the Coast headquarters this afternoon and picked up the April/May issue while I was there....looking lovely as usual! Quick photos again...but you can see the drawings in better detail on my website.

Horniman Museum

Had a nice reunion/catch up with some friends this weekend at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill....if you like natural history it is perfect for you! Completely dated presentation and dusty animals (including a cabinet of dog's heads) made for a much loved display! Here are a few favourites...the globe fish has a great smile! There was also a lovely photography exhibition featuring the images from the mummers, maypoles and milkmaids book showing a 'journey through the ritual year'.

Scarborough Art Gallery

I am going to have some prints on sale at Scarborough Art Gallery alongside their much anticipated Fears, Foes and Fairies exhibition which opens next Friday. I can't wait to have a look at the collection of charms and amulets (you can pick up your own modern day rabbit foot made by myself!) and have a go on the 'charmacy'!. I will be hosting a workshop as part of the museums at night events later on in the year, alongside this exhibition - will keep you posted!

Northern Print

I can finally direct people in my home town of Newcastle Upon Tyne to somewhere local to buy my prints - Northern Print on Stepney Bank will shortly have a good selection of my prints for sale in their browser. As a long standing visitor/member/fan of Northern Print I am thrilled to be able to include them as one of my stockists.

A new drawing (to be made in to part of a contemporary chapbook - inspired by my recent visit to Cecil Sharp House's Broadside Day) inspired by the wonderful words of the Gentle Author of the Spitalfields life blog about the London mudlarks. I particularly liked the description of the Thames as 'a miry hoard of secrets'. More to come!

Got a nice letter and pile of polish postcards through the post this week from mother dearest. Thankyou!

The Tube Gallery

I now have some prints for sale in The Tube Gallery in Woodstock in Oxfordshire. They have an exciting exhibition coming up featuring works made with the Penfold Press starting in April

I am very pleased to have an illustration in this months brilliant Selvedge magazine about the (predominantly 1960's) fabric CRIMPLENE! I'll have to get my shockingly bright blue crimplene jacket out sometime soon if the weather stays nice for longer than a day!
And make sure if you are in London to take a trip to the Selvedge Spring Fair at the end of the month - it is sure to provide some desirables!

from something I am working on. Will reveal more when the project is finished.

(and beat up man). Sketchbook drawings from a commission I am working on at the moment...

Flier design for the Greennote folk fest.

For those of you who don't know I have recently moved to London and have thrown myself into the abundance of culture and work whole-heartedly! I am working on several commissions at the moment but here are a few things I have managed to fit in between which I have found particularly inspiring!

Broadside day at Cecil Sharp House was a particularly inspiring and insightful day exploring the printed matter of broadsides and chapbooks headed by the wonderful Steve Roud including a lovely talk about contemporary illustrators and chapbook makers by Desdemona Mcannon.

Columbia Road flower market is my new favourite Sunday morning stroll venue - plus you can get bargain flowers to boot!

Took a trip to the much hyped Shrigley exhibition at the Hayward Gallery and had a bit of a giggle - not a single other person laughed. Much too serious a crowd for my liking!

The words words words scheme at Selfridges has been one of particular interest with the store being taken over with pieces made by designers to celebrate the printed word: a talk hosted by itsnicethat was really interesting - not the sort of people I would normally listen to/research so opened up my mindset a bit more to what people are doing! Particularly loved the innovative game designs by Holly Gramazio for Hide&Seek.

A talk at the Wellcome trust (alongside the Charmed exhibition which I can't celebrate enough) about 'the king's evil' was brilliant - I have read a lot about the superstition that the monarchs were believed to be able to cure 'scrofula' - it was great to hear much more and get to handle an original golden touchpiece!

Lots of other things going on inbetween but these were a few highlights - will update with some work soon!
